About This Project

Dan Petley’s Lives of the Artists is a satirical cartoon series about art history.  The textual elements are influenced by the tradition of political cartoons first refined by Hogarth in the 18th century. The illustrations are influenced equally by contemporary cartoonists and character composition in the work of the old masters. Utilising his encyclopaedic knowledge of western art history, Dan produces pieces that not only experienced art fans, but also those who are quite new to the seemingly stuffy world of art history can enjoy. One original slant to the series is the use of contemporary references in some pieces, such as modern products and appliances. This original effect adds another level of humour and assists the viewer by helping artists that could appear distant and alien, to connect with to our own time and lifestyles.
